ST: Geylang comes to life
At 1.30am, Singapore's famous nightlife district of Geylang is just waking up. ST photojournalist Desmond Wee shows us some of the late-night activities of this bustling neon-lit area. This is the third in our four-part series featuring people working and playing while you were sleeping.
1.30am
Some of those drawn to Geylang trawl its streets for action but this woman spotted near Lorong 20 is searching for something different: cardboard and cans. Paid just 20 cents per kg, the rag-and-bone woman has a long night ahead of her.
2am
The night's young, the coffee's hot and the singing... Well, let's not talk about the singing. Pedestrians walk past a coffee shop on Lorong 19 with a neon-lit karaoke lounge in the background.

Customers satisfying an appetite of a different kind at Yong He Eating House on Geylang Lorong 27A. Famous for its soya beancurd and Taiwanese oyster mee sua, the place is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
3.30am
Women gather along Geylang Road off Lorong 15 and Lorong 17, attracting curious stares from passers-by.
4am
A durian seller takes down the unsold fruits of his labour at his stall on Sims Avenue, near Lorong 17. There are more than 20 durian stalls along Sims Avenue and Geylang Road.
